Hi!, I’m Harsh Vardhan Roy and welcome to another superb episode. In the previous video/post we have learned how to do the Professional Colour Grading in Adobe Photoshop Using the Colour Balance Adjustment Layer and then we have also learned how to create your own LUT Preset so that you can colour grade images very easily using the LUT Presets.
If you have not watched those videos please watch them here.
So, without further ado let’s get started.
Here we will use the Camera Raw filter to Colour Grade this image and for that purpose.
You can download this image by clicking here. Image Link
1. Create a Duplicate Copy of the Layer
First of all, what you have to do is to create a duplicate copy of your main image so that it remains safe and that is called the non-destructive editing.
2. Go to Camera Raw Filter
So now we’ll press CTR+J or CMD+J if you are using Mac to have a duplicate copy of it and thereafter, we will go to the Filter and we will select the Camera Raw filter. If you are using the Adobe Photoshop CC version then you might have this option but if you are using the older version like CS5 or CS6 then you might not have this option available for you.
Then you may have to click on this or you can simply press the shortcut keyboard command and that is CTR+SHIFT+A or CMD+SHIFT+A.
That’s going to launch the Camera Raw filter. The good thing about this is that you can even use the jpg files, which I am using right now to make some adjustments.
3. Go to the HSL Adjustment Panel
This is the HSL adjustment Panel and basically, in this method, we will be targeting different colours and we will be giving them different looks. Basically, we will be targeting Hue Saturation and Luminance.
Hue is basically the different Colour Tone. So, we can target or make the red colour to something like this where it has a pink tone or we can take it to the Orang side. And then we have the orange colours we can take it to the red side or towards the yellow side and then we have the yellow we can drag this slider to the orange side or to the green side.
Using this technique, we have control over all these different colours. And we can take them two different ways and that’s how we can colour grade using the HSL Panel.
First, we have the Hue and who is basically the different shades of the colour and then we have the saturation. Saturation is basically how rich that colour would look or how vibrant that colour would look. Similarly, there is luminance and luminance is basically the brightness value of that colour.
With the help of Luminance, we can make the colours darker if we drag the slider toward the left side and we can make them brighter if we drag the slider on the right side.
In HSL Panel, we have the red-orange yellow-greens and all of these colours. We can make them brighter or darker depending on the mood or the look we want to go for.
So, we will be using this HSL panel to colour grade this image or you can come over here on this Calibration option. Here we can use this as well and this is the fastest way of doing it but first, let me show you how we can do this using the HSL panel.
First of all, we will be in the HUE tab and for this purpose, I am going to give it a Teal and Orange Look. Which is very popular these days and which is a cinematic kind of Colour grading.
So, for that purpose what you can do come down to the Blues option. To get the Teal and Orange Cinematic Look we need to target Blue and Aqua colours. Since we want to give it a teal look so what we’ll do first of all we’ll take the aqua colour and click the slider towards the Teal colour or this sky-blue colour.
Similarly, we will take the blue and we will take it towards the sky-blue colour.
You can just notice the difference immediately. But When we’ll click and drag the Aqua colour slider towards the Teal side, you can see nothing is happening reason being that there is no aqua colour available in this image. So, if there is no colour, it’s not going to affect it anyway. So, no matter where you take it, it’s not going to affect it.
Now let’s take the blue slider and let’s click and drag it to the left side and now you can see the difference we are getting in the image look.
You can see the Teal Colour in the coat of this gentleman and if we drag it to the purple side you can see we are getting the purple hue in the coat. But we’ll click and drag it to Teal side.
For this effect to work you have to have a blue colour in your image but if you don’t have the blue colour there is a workaround which I’ll show you in a moment. Now we have added some Teal colour or the teal shades to the image. You can see it in this sky that we have got the teal colour there also.
Now we need to make the skin tone look little bit Orange and for that purpose, we’ll go to the red colour and we’ll click and drag it to the right side and you will notice the difference in the skin tone. But you don’t want to take it too far where it looks very unnatural but we can go for something subtle. By now you can see that skin is little bit orangish. But if you take it to the green side it’s not going to be looking good, so, we’ll be taking it towards the orange side.
If you want to see what we have achieved so far, just press P on the keyboard and you will see the before and After side-by-side.
And if you want to look colour look rich you can increase the saturation of aqua colour or the blue colour, and orange colour by dragging the saturation sliders towards the right side.
4. Adding the Blue Colour in the Image
Alright, now I will show you how you can fake a blue colour if your image doesn’t have the blue colour. So, in that case, what you can do, come to this Basic Exposure Panel which is the first panel in Adobe Camera Raw.
We’ll click on it and then over there is an option of Temperature. By default, it would be in the middle as you shot it. But you can change it to the Auto or Custom or anything else but we need not go into that, we just have to focus on the temperature.
So, on the temperature slider so we can click and drag it towards the right side and that’s going to add lots of Warmness to the image and if we drag it to the left side is going to add the blue colour to the image. When we drag it towards the left side, you can see now, we start to see the real effect (Teal and Orange Cinematic Effect) but make sure you don’t have to go too far because that would look fake and very unprofessional.
Therefore, we’ll add a just a hint of blue. You can see the result we have achieved so far with the help of HSL panel and the Temperature.
5. Save the Cinematic Colour Grading Preset
Now let me just reset everything to show you how you can do the same thing with the help of Camera Calibration Adjustment Panel. But before that let’s save this setting so that you can just quickly apply all of this effect easily. For that purpose, what you need to do to come over here on the Setting Panels and here you need to come down and select this Page like icon and just click over it.
That’s going to open up a dialogue box over. There you need to first give it a name like Teal Orange Look Test and that would be in a group or User Preset or you can create a new group. But by default, let it be in the User Presets.
Now, you can go for all of these settings or you can selectively go for the selective settings. Suppose if you want to do some other adjustments in the image like treatment of white balance, exposure etcetera, then you don’t want to save all these settings because all these settings which have currently been applied to this image would be applied to your new image.
Let me explain it a bit! suppose if your new image has less exposure and if you apply this Preset, you might not get the perfect exposure and your image may be under or overexposed. So, for that purpose what you have to do is to just select only custom settings.
Therefore, select Check None first and then, we need to check the White Balance because in case even if your image would not have the blue colour or the aqua colour, even in that case you will get the same look.
Then select or check the HSL adjustment as we created this effect with the help of that and leave other things as it is. Finally, we’ll press the Ok and that’s going to save it and you can see it in the Presets with the name you have given it. Here I have given it Teal and Orange Look Test.
If you want to test your preset then open a new image, select Camera Raw Filter then to go to the preset option or this setting like icon and click over there and you will find your preset here it is Teal and Orange Look Test. Just click over it and you will see effect would be applied immediately with just one click and you can use it with any image. But if you feel that the effect is too much of teal colour just go to the Basic Panel and bring back the Temperature to towards the middle as you like.
Cinematic Teal and Orange Look using Calibration Panel in Adobe Camera Raw
So, this is how we can just do this with the help of HSL panel and now I’ll show you how you can do the same thing with the help of the camera calibration panel.
We’ll go to the calibration panel and there we have similar options. We have the Red Channel-Green Channel and Blue Channel and each panel have two sliders, one for the Hue and one for the Saturation.
So, we can adjust the Hue of red so we can take it to towards the pink side or we can take it to the Orange side and then we can adjust the saturation. Similarly, we have the option for the green colour and the blue Colour.
The advantage of this is that you have to work with only three colours or three sliders to work with. Earlier in the HSL panel, you have lots of different colours like red, orange, yellow, green, aqua, blue, etc. which gives you more control over the image or the colours look. But here you have only three options so you can get the same look with the help of this one as well.
Let me just show you so. first of all, target the red primary. So, click and drag it to the orange side or right side to get orange in the skin and then in the saturation option increase the saturation a little bit. Thereafter, come down on the blue primary and click and drag this slider to the left side so that’s going to add some teal or cyan in the image then increase the saturation.
But you can see that we don’t have much blue colour in this image, so go to the Basic Panel and drag temperature slider to the left side a little bit. But if you will just go this much that won’t look good or professional. so subtle effect is just fine and go back to the Calibration option and over here if you want you can adjust the Green primary but this is not going to affect much. And we have achieved this Teal and Orange Cinematic Effect with the help of just three sliders. We have almost got a similar result as we got with the help of HSL Panel.
So, this is how you can colour grade using the HSL panel and the camera calibration panel and you can get the cinematic teal and orange look with the help of this one and if you want you can use my teal and orange look Photoshop action as well which will give you the instant result like this very easily. You can get to this preset as well.
Exporting Camera Raw setting as Lightroom Preset
Now, let me show you how you can export this preset which you can use even in the Lightroom. In order to save it as Lightroom Preset just click on this hamburger menu which is on the top right corner and click save settings that are again going to open up a dialogue box and here you can select all settings or you can select selective settings. First, check none and select the white balance because that’s very important and then we have adjusted the calibration option so just check it and select the process version as well. Since we in the HSL panel we have not touched that and then we’ll press save and that’s going to open up the file browser so you can just save it anywhere you want by giving it a name.
