If you are a content creator like me who loves to create Photoshop Tutorial or Photography Tutorial Videos for YouTube or Online Courses for any other platforms like Udemy, Skillshare or your own Online School on Teachable, you know that Audio is a very important part of the Videos.
Having a good Microphone is really integral to the great quality Videos as the sound plays a more important part in any video.
Usually, as a content creator, we have tried many microphones and it is quite possible that some of us do have more than one Microphone.
If you do have more than one Microphone, then the following question might have come to your mind at some point: –
Whatever, the question you have, you will find the answer to all of this in this post.
But first, let’s understand.
One of the possible reasons could be that you have more than 1 microphone and you might be using only 1 at a time and the other one might be lying dormant biting dust in your drawers.
The other reason could be that you want to experiment which microphone gives you the better audio quality or what would be quality of the audio recording if you use 2 microphones at the same time.
But whatever could be the reason for you to know how to use or connect 2 microphones at the same time, let’s get to the actual way to do this.
Watch the Video to connect Multiple Mics to a computer at the same time.
Read the Blog Post if you like..
Most of the Screen Recording software allows only 1 microphone as your main audio input.
Most of the popular Screen Recording software has only 1 Audio input option which makes it difficult to connect multiple microphones at the same time for recording.
Even popular DAWS (Digital Audio Work Stations) like Audacity, Adobe Audition has only one option to choose your main microphone input and there is no option to connect multiple microphones or combine two microphone input into one.
In that case either you have to buy some audio mixing hardware like Audio Mixer which is quite costly or you need to use some kind of software which can take two inputs from 2 microphones and produce 1 output.
There are some paid options to do so but thankfully there is a completely free software which can do this job for you excellently.
And that software is called the Voicemeeter from VB-Audio which is an absolutely Free Software.
The first step is to go to this link to download the Voicemeeter from VB-Audio.
You can choose to download the Installer .exe file or the Zip file.
But I prefer installer .exe, so that you don’t have to unzip the file and then install it, which is an extra step.
Once, downloaded, then install the software which is a common process where you have to follow the instructions on your screen.
After successful installation, restart your PC and make sure both of your microphones are connected properly to the pc.
Then search of the Voicemeter desktop app on your pc and open it.
You will see the below interface.
First of all, click on the 1stHardware input and then select your 1st Microphone from the dropdown lists.
If you are not sure about the name of your microphones then click on the Sound Icon on the lower right corner of the desktop. See the image below:
Then right click there and select Sounds and that would open a dialogue box.
Then switch to the Recording Tab and here you will find all of your connected Microphones.
You can find the names here and then go back to the Voicemeter App and Select your Frist Hardware input and choose the desired microphone.
Thereafter click on the second Hardware input source and select your 2nd microphones from the dropdown lists.
At the time you might not notice anything at the peak meters because there is still one more step to take.
And then leave the third option of Virtual Input as it is and just go to the final Hardware Output select one of the speakers which are not currently in use.
This is very important because if you select your main output speaker then you will notice Eco in your Recordings which is absolutely not fine in any way.
So, how do you know which one is your Default Speaker Output?
To know that you again have to go the Speaker Icon and select sound and then switch to the Playback tab and here you will notice some outputs.
Here you will see your Default Speaker Output which has the green label on it.
Here you will also notice Voicemeeter App also, you don’t have to set this a default communication device of the output device otherwise it will not work.
Now go back to the Voicemeter app and then select the final Hardware Output to something else other than your default speakers output and the Voicemeter.
Once you will select that you will notice that Peak meters started showing sound waves while you speak.
Now the most important step which will allow combining or connect multiple microphones into one and that is changing your default recording input
See the image below and set the Voicemeeter as your default recording device.
In order to work this properly, you have to make sure that while recording Voicemeeter app must be open but if you close it your microphone would not work.
By default, Voicemeeter app is not loaded automatically on Windows or System startup.
Launch the Voicemeeter app and Click on Menu Button on the Top Right Corner.
That would open a drop-down list of some options.
Just click on the System Tray Run on Startup, which would enable check on this.
See the image below!
Now the Voicemeeter app would run on startup automatically and you don’t have to open it manually to combine two microphones into one every time to want to record.
And that is it.
Now you have successfully connected 2 microphones or multiple microphones to your pc which can be used at the same time.
Now you can go to any of your recording software be it Audacity, Audition, Skype, OBS, or Camtasia Studio and choose the Voicemeeter as your input Source to get the sound from both the microphones.
See some examples below:
Just open your screen recording software, in my case, it is Obs Stream Labs and from the Mic/input option, I will click on the properties.
Then here you will notice Voicemeter option besides your connected microphones.
You have to select the Voicemeter option.
And now you might have started noticing peak meter reflected sound waves.
In order to use or Record 2 Microphones at once in Audacity you need to go to the Edit then Preference then Devices and in Recording Select Vociemeeter and Press Ok.
See the image below:
In order to connect multiple microphones in Adobe Audition follow the below steps.
Go to Edit-Select Preference-Select Audio Hardware and here Select Voicemeeter as Input.
If you want to use multiple microphones for Skype, you can do so with the Voicemeeter.
In order to connect multiple microphones in Skype follow the below steps.
Go to Profile-Select Settings–Audio Video-Select- Microphone and choose Voicemeeter.
I hope using this Free App called Voicemeeter you can easily connect multiple microphones into one and record the sound at the same time be it Audacity, Audition, OBS, or Camtasia.
